We currently use an OEM Manufacturer's speakers (located in the USA) the that meet our design requirements.
*Some of the highlights of the woofer specs include a resonant frequency (Fs) 34 HZ, total Q factor of 0.35, 50 watts continuous power/ 100 watts program power, 25 - 6,000 HZ, & 92 dB sensitivity.
It was especially important finding a woofer that would provide deep bass in a relatively small enclosure that would mate well with lower powered amplifiers. Specs like low Q factors (0.35) are important to minimize "ringing", provide better transient response, & help the speaker stop faster. Values between 0.5-0.7 are considered low while higher values (0.7 - 1.1) tend to produce warm bass that can tend to sound "boomy".
No - In fact, the v.2 can be used effectively with low-powered tube amplifier (7-12 watts) or higher-powered solid-state amplifiers. The Ubiquitous have a modest power rating. As with all speakers, the first watt is most important to provide clean sound. 1 watt will provide approx. 92 dB of sound within 1 meter. This is equivalent to a Subway Train at 200 feet.
An Omni-Polar Speaker is designed to interact with the living space. Sound waves are reflected (& absorbed) via walls, ceilings, or other objects in the room. The sound tends to be multi-directional, or 360 degrees in nature. They can create an immersive experience where the entire space behind the speaker seems to project the sound. Lost is the feeling of sound coming directly from the speaker - presentation becomes bigger and more natural. As a result, you tend to not have a single "sweet spot"... everyone in a room can enjoy great sound; However, in some instances the trade-off can be focus and sharpness. The v.2 does a great job at maintaining this focus and clarity.
You have many liberties in placement. The idea of an equilateral triangle where the listening space is proportional to the distance between the speaker is not necessarily required. Each room is unique and different and so too is positioning. Generally speaking, starting as above can help - but you will quickly find positioning can be done to accommodate your life (& the furniture!) without destroying sound presentation as with traditional box speakers.
Next, try pulling the speakers forward from the back or side wall(s) a bit to allow for some reflection (18-24+ inches) & pay attention to overly reflective surfaces that may emphasize high frequencies or absorptive surfaces that may lower it. The attenuator on the back allows you to turn up or down the mid/high frequencies to accommodate for this. The great thing is you will notice you can walk about the room and sit in various positions while still maintaining a stereo image and good sound!
Although the Ubiquitous v.2 is our current "full production" speaker, we've also designed a mighty bookshelf speaker called the "Mini-Ubi v.2". We also also just testing open baffle speaker stands with integrated subwoofers to compliment the Mini-Ubi. We no strangers to our other designs, we can reproduce the "Ubiquitous v.1", our "Vader" Open Baffle Speaker, & "The Transmission Line" & 15" horn loaded classics comparable to the "Schmidt A7". If you'd like to talk about something special, reach out and let's talk!
